Social media has been present for a few years now. Celebrities nowadays use it as a outlet to keep their followers aware and connected to their lives. Influencers that may have started on platforms such as Vine or Youtube will use social media as a job. Posting these pictures is a way for them to gain money.
The content that they post on social media is monetized which is why being an influencer on social media has become a job. This community of influencers is huge and has grown over the years. Wether these people are huge celebrities with millions of followers or they are influencers with thousands of followers there is a lot of hate.
Influencers such as the self made Canadian Elisabeth Rioux have a lot of negative comments on her pictures on Instagram. She is an entrepreneur and has started her bathing suit company called Hoaka Swimwear. Most of her content on social media are pictures of her in bathing suits. This is part of her job and what she has to do to keep her company going. Since she is skinny and always has been she always has negative comments about how she is too skinny and that she should eat more. Or that her pictures are too edited because it isn’t possible that she is so skinny. On the other hand if she were to be fat people would criticize her too.
She has been very open about this issue on social media and has talked about it on her Youtube channel. She explains that she is tired of constantly having to justify herself and explaining that she hasn’t done plastic surgery or that her pictures are not photoshopped. She would like her platform to be a positive outlet for her fans. Being constantly criticized on social media can be very hard mainly at such a great level.
As another example Kylie Jenner who is on of the most followed celebrities on social media with 105 million followers has received a lot of criticisms over the years because already at the age of 18 she looked 25 years old. Her fans will always be searching in her pictures for photoshopping and it is always very dramatic when a picture has been edited.
Being in the public eye nowadays is complicated and a lot of work because people will expect perfection in pictures or in lives but they will at the same time be looking for any imperfection that they may find. Celebrities and influencers will get criticized whatever they do and that is a part of their job. It is always important to remember that these people are still human beings and that negative comments affect anyone and everyone.

Hello Helena ! I think that the arrival of the mention "edited picture" is a great first step for people to understand this difference between fake bodies and real people ! :)
Thanks for your comment Lyska :)
Your comment is extremely constructive Lina, thank you :) ! Indeed, it's something that is hard to define as influencers become influencers thanks to their followers !
Hi Margot, this is a really cool topic. I agree with you and how huge influencers have a big impact on people's self-image. I think its a shame that people are quick to edit their bodies due to enhanced body standards and unrealistic body image. What do you think could be done to help young women and men understand the difference between these "edited" images and real people?
Hey ! I think your article is very interesting. It is true their will always be people to criticize anything. It seems hard to be an influencer because no matter what someone will have something to say probably won't be very constructive ...
