Social media are a way to hit a wide audience. People want to show themselves, their lives and their bodies. They want people to see them, admire them and love them. When you put yourself on internet, you give people the possibility to attack you, social media generate hate.
Body shaming is a trend and it affects everybody, either you are skinny, big, tall, small, or whatever the color of your skin, people will always find something to criticize. The problem is that when people comment something on the internet they do not always realize the range of their words. Some people on the contrary are mean because they are jealous or just frustrated.
A lot of celebrities are victims of body shaming because they are spied upon on social media, on magazines and everybody wants to give their opinions on their body, if they gained or lost weight, if they wear or not makeup…
When something is on the internet people appropriate your image and think they can say whatever they want and that it will affect nobody.
There are many types of body shaming: fat shaming, slut shaming (for the girls that are supposed “easy”), skinny shaming, and a lot of others that are just meant to belittle others. An American website which is masochist, sexist and homophobe even recently launched the “fat shaming week”, or the humiliation week of the “fat people”.
With the advertising campaigns showing photoshoped bodies, perfect men and women, people have lost the vision of the “real body” and have in mind only the ideal human body, which does not exist.
Everyone has his difference and we must not forget that imperfection makes perfection and that the beauty of the world is due to his diversity.

A big thank you Clémence ! It's those kind of comments that make us want to continue this blog ! :)
I really think that it's both ! Social media is a good evolution as well as a manipulation ! Thank you for your question Lina :)
Hello Juliette ! I do think that the mention "edited picture" will change things, maybe not concerning the shaming, but maybe will increase the confidence of people on social media ! :)
It's important to talk about those kind of subject knowing that a lot of young people are exposed to this kind of shaming, and to know what to do if you are a victim of it. But also to know why they are doing it, it's not you, it's them!
We need to focus more on body positivity and spread happiness trough photos that makes you feel good !
Amazing article ! Very accurate and interesting.
Spread happiness !
Really interesting article that highlights the question of the real impact of social media : are these new technologies a good evolution for us or have they become a mean to control everyone's life and manipulate people?
